Nian Liu

Los Angeles, CA

I was born in Guan Dong, China in 1990. We lived in an agricultural village, mainly growing rice. My grandmother was really respected in that village mainly because she acted as the village elder. People would come to her with many problems and she was the mediator. Problems range from family quarrels, giving births, deaths, ceremonial rituals, etc. I lived in that village along with my mother, father, sister, grandmother, aunt, and uncle until I was about seven years old. Then I was brought to the U.S.A., where I grew up to the present.

My educational background is very typical. I hold a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, Davis. However, this degree doesn't seem to help me land a good paying job. But I have rediscover what I am most good at, which is art. I always had the ability to draw at a very young age but I was never encouraged to hone that skill because math and English are more important. I went through the traditional U.S. school curriculum with barely any interest, which is not to say that I didn't go for that A. However, after graduating and thrust into the job market, I've realized that all I want to do is make art and do some investing on the side (the Economic degree didn't go completely to waste).
