At FinerWorks we offer two types of canvas, a gloss and a matte canvas. The gloss canvas has a satin luster like finish to the surface while the matte is a bright white flat matte-like finish. Both options are equally popular among FinerWorks customers, ranging from professional artists and photographers to grandmothers that have just entered the digital realm with their new digital cameras and tons of pictures of the grand kids.

+ Why Print on Canvas

Why print on canvas? Well why not. Printing on canvas has taken the fine art and photo printing industry by storm. It use to be that cheap (quality) canvas prints were made by photo labs by pasting a thin photographic layer onto a canvas panel. Things have come a long way since then. In the 1980s as digital printing technology became available, the fine art industry began to make “giclee” prints on canvas. As the technology improved the quality did so as well. Today canvas prints have become so popular that not only are artists using it to reproduce their work but professional photographers have readily adopted it as a way to offer a wider range of print styles. Because FinerWorks initially began as only a canvas print on demand service and is run by artists and photographers, we have spent a lot of time on this.

Canvas Mounting Options You Can Choose

No Mounting (Class A )

This is not mounted. Prints on canvas that are not mounted as well as prints on paper will include a 1 to 2 inch border going around the print area designated in an order. In most cases these prints will be shipped in a sturdy cardboard shipping tube. Orders with a large volume of prints may be shipped flat if the print's size is not too large for a box.

Standard Canvas Mount (Class B )

The more common method for a canvas print which will be framed, this style secures the canvas with staples visible on the side. Since canvas stretches a slight amount of print bleed may show on the sides. Because the stapes are visible most people will frame their print. When searching for a frame make sure you find a frame deep enough since the mounted print is approximately 3/4 inches deep. This option is not available if any side of the print is 30 inches or greater. The frame thickness is 3/4 inch.

White Side Canvas Mount (Class C )

Unlike the standard wrap method the white sides wrapped print has the staples in the back. A slight amount of print bleed may wrap over the sides. For larger prints, this method provides more even tension all the way around and also prevent bowing in of the stretcher bars. Because the stapes are in the back some people will hang these prints up without a frame. The frame thickness is 3/4 inch.

Gallery Wrapped Canvas (Class D )

This method is used when you do not plan to place your print in a frame but want to hang it up immediately. Approximately 1 inch of the image on every side will wrap around therefore the image itself will need to be slightly larger than the mounting framework. The frame thickness is 3/4 inch.

Museum Wrapped Canvas (Class E )

These prints are on a mounting frame with a thickness of 1-1/2 inch deep. This method is used when you do not plan to place you print in a frame but want to hang it up immediately. Approximately 1-3/4 inch of the image on every side will wrap around therefore the image itself will be printed slightly larger than the mounting framework.

Canvas in Display Frame (Class F )

This wood display frame for canvas only is available in black, mahogany and a natural wood color. These will be approximately 1 inch deep and 3/4 inches wide when looking at the print straight on. The canvas print will also be mounted within the frame using the standard wrap (or white side wrap for large prints).

Including a Protective Finish Option

At FinerWorks we recommend this be applied to the canvas unless you are ordering a gallery or museum wrapped canvas in which the image wraps around the sides (in that case it is automatically included). The protective finish is an oderless water based liquid laminate spray made especially for canvas prints. It provides an extra barrier of protection against fingerprints and smudging. It also includes UV inhibitors to help extend the lifetime of your print. When you select your canvas type you can choose this option.
